King’ongo Secondary School in Ubungo, Dar es Salaam  the school where Lydia Charles Moyo began her secondary education journey from 2007 to 2010   now has new modern toilets for its teachers, thanks to her support.

Through this initiative, Lydia, the Founder and Executive Director of Her Initiative, and a recipient of the Global Citizen Prize and KBF Africa Prize, sought to give back to the school that shaped her sense of purpose and leadership.

“I have always spoken about how my time at King’ongo shaped my purpose. Many stories about my work begin here  in a place that taught me resilience and empathy. Building these toilets is my way of honoring that journey and expressing gratitude to the school that played such a big role in who I have become.”

The facility includes six toilets for both male and female teachers, a much-needed improvement that enhances the school’s hygiene and environment. Lydia said the idea was inspired by a conversation she had earlier this year with her former English teacher, who spoke about the urgent need for better facilities.

Though the teacher passed away before seeing the project completed, Lydia placed a foundation under Lilian Lengwana  as a tribute to her and to teachers everywhere who give so much to others.

“Being a teacher is one of the most incredible jobs that deserves recognition. I hope this small contribution inspires others to go back to their schools and give back in ways that make a difference.”

For Lydia, the connection between education, dignity, and opportunity is deeply personal. Having grown up in a community where many girls struggled to finish school due to poverty, she has devoted her life to creating solutions that empower young women and girls to achieve their full potential.
